Why you need to take out contents protection for your goods while in storage
We know your possessions are valuable. That’s why, at Storage Geeks, we do everything we possibly can to make sure they’re safe and secure while in storage. But there are some things we just can’t guarantee to safeguard your goods against, such as fire, flood and infestation. For example, if a neighbouring customer didn’t defrost their freezer properly before placing it in storage, this might lead to water leaking into your storage room causing damage to your possessions.
Unfortunately, the majority of home insurance policies don’t cover your valuable possessions while they are stored away from your home address and in a self storage facility. And those that do provide cover, don’t cover many of the specific storage perils. So we’ve come up with a service that is specifically tailored to exactly meet your storage needs.
Ensuring everyone has contents protection for their goods
In the past, customers have taken out their own insurance at the start of their storage, then not let it continue. This meant they could not make a claim if the worst happened or have storage compensation to offer if their goods damaged someone else’s possessions. For everyone’s peace of mind, we need to know that all customers are covered at all times - that’s why all customers must have contents protection for their goods while they are in our self storage facility. It’s worth noting that many of our competitors take the same approach.
Storage Geeks Enhanced Liability Service has been specially designed for the protection of your goods while they are in self storage and covers a wider range of potential perils than normal household insurance.
What our Enhanced Liability Service protects against
Our Enhanced Liability Service has a number of benefits over most household insurance policies. It will protect your goods against fire, flood, explosion, storm, mildew, mould and just about everything else, such as;
- Physical loss or damage to your property caused by burst pipes or escape of water (including damage to labels on wine bottles)
- Theft accompanied by forcible and violent entry or exit
- Moth, insect or vermin damage from an external source
- Fire
- Lightning
- Explosion
- Earthquake
- Storm
- Riot
- Strike
- Civil commotion
- Malicious damage
- Impact by vehicles and aircraft
Protects your home insurance benefits
Because our Enhanced Liability Service is designed specifically for your items in self storage , it does not affect the ‘no claims’ on your home insurance policy or any claims you might make on your home insurance in the future.
The right cover for you
Your quote for contents protection for your goods, through our Enhanced Liability Service, will be based on the full replacement value of what you’re storing with us. For an estimate, add up the full replacement value of the items you will place in your storage space and call one of our local storage facilities.
You will be asked to complete an inventory of all the items you put into storage – and in particular to identify any valuable items (valued at over £1,000) you want to put into storage. You will then establish the full replacement value of your contents. That way, not only do you only pay for what you need, but if anything’s damaged beyond repair while it’s in storage, you can be sure you will be compensated and paid the full replacement cost. The cost of our Enhanced Liability Service starts from £5 per week for £3,000 of cover.
Continuous protection for your valuables
Your cover is valid from the moment you put your valuables into self storage, right up to the second you take them away. And because everyone has either taken out our Enhanced Liability Service or confirmed the arrangement of their own insurance, you’re fully covered if anyone else’s possessions cause harm to yours.
Your own dedicated compensation manager
We hope you don’t have to make a claim for any compensation during or after your stay with us. But should the worst happen, our compensation manager and the team at our store are ready to deal with your claim quickly to make sure you get your payment as soon as possible.
